Best Boat Cleaning Products and Tips

Boat Cleaning Products

Boats are a big investment, and quality boat cleaning products will help keep them in top shape.  Most boats depreciate significantly in only the first few years of ownership.  This is due, in part, to a lack of proper care.

Exposure to fuel, oil, saltwater, and the rays of the sun can take a toll on a boat, and caring for it requires the proper boat cleaning products.  Most boats today are made from fiberglass with an outer coating called gelcoat to give them that beautiful, shiny appearance.  To maintain that shine, the boat needs to be cleaned and waxed regularly.

Boat Cleaning Products and Equipment

A simple way to gather all the necessary supplies for cleaning your boat is to purchase boat cleaning equipment.  Boat cleaning kits typically include:

  • Boat wax, such as Boat Bright, to reduce water spots, scratches, and fading
  • Upholstery cleaner, such as Seat Soap, to protect vinyl and leather surfaces
  • Water spot remover, such as Spot Solver, for protection from hard water spots
  • Boat wash, such as Boat Bubbles, for cleaning away buildup

3M also carries a line of marine products, including boat soap and wax.  Many boaters say 3M boat cleaning products are among the highest quality products in the business.

These products can also be purchased individually.  Important equipment includes scrub brushes, towels, and a vacuum.  A boat vacuum cleaner is a great alternative to large, clunky vacuums that are cumbersome in the tight spaces of a boat.

Boat vacuums are compact, yet powerful.  Many models are portable and attach to the wall when not in use.

Boat Cleaning Products – Eco-Friendly Choices

Many boat cleaning products can be toxic.  Not only do these toxic products harm the environment in their production, but they also harm our waters and sea life after application.  Fortunately, natural options are available to protect your boat and the waters it travels through.

Baking soda is a great all-purpose cleaner.  A paste made of baking soda and water can be used to remove stains from fiberglass on your boat.  Glass surfaces can be cleaned to sparkle with vinegar and water.

Plastic surfaces and decks also come clean with a vinegar and water solution, and wood can be cleaned and moisturized with olive oil.  Aluminum surfaces respond well to a mixture of cream of tartar with water.

Bio-Kleen offers a line of eco-friendly boat cleaners including a hull and fiberglass cleaner, polish, and oxidation remover.  These cleaners are all non-toxic and biodegradable.  Bio-Kleen’s Super Suds boat wash is non-toxic, phosphate-free, and biodegradable.

Other Tips about Boat Cleaning Products

The application of a good coat of wax prevents the boat from picking up debris, which in turn prevents the need to use harsh soaps or detergents.  Also, the simple act of promptly wiping up spilled fuel or oil with a rag protects both the boat and the environment.

You should take a look at Universal Stone. It’s eco friendly and is great at restoring the shine to GRP, glass, stainless etc without scratching. It cleans upholstery too, timber, painted surfaces and can be used in the boat too in the galley etc. It contains no chemicals or phosphates. Cleans rib tubes really well too.
