The Best Natural Wood Deck Cleaning Products

Deck Cleaning Products

So many different deck cleaning products available today makes choosing the best one for your deck a bit confusing. Some wood deck cleaning products are more earth-friendly than others, so it pays to be able to read the labels and understand what they really mean.

Oxygen Bleach Deck Cleaning Products

One of the first things to do when looking at the label is to find a deck cleaner that contains oxygen bleach.  Of course regular bleach is one of the most harmful chemicals used in the average household today, but oxygen bleach products are great natural deck cleaners.

To find out if the deck cleaning products you are considering have oxygen bleach in them, look for the ingredient sodium percarbonate.  That is not to be confused with sodium hypochlorite, which is the same as chlorine bleach.  These products can damage the wood and actually change the color of it.

Cleaners with oxygen bleach will take care of all kinds of stains, from mold and mildew to organic stains.  Usually you can find a deck cleaner like this among Home Depot products.

Another option to find oxygen bleach is to mix water with an organic laundry detergent, which usually uses oxygen bleach.  This makes it very easy to find a deck cleaner that will not harm the wood or any family members or pets who use the deck.

Common Household Deck Cleaning Products

In addition to oxygen bleach products, there are also some other common household items that work wonders when it comes to cleaning decks.  Combine these three items to get a good homemade deck cleaner:

  • Water
  • White Vinegar
  • Baking Soda

If you are worried about fungus on the deck, then water and white vinegar is definitely the way to go.  Vinegar is a natural killer of most organic and bacterial stains, even on wood.

Baking soda is known to be a natural deodorizer, and it works great when mixed with water.  If you have already been keeping your deck clean regularly, then all you may need is a good scrubbing with a baking soda and water solution.

Deck Cleaning Products and Other Outdoor Cleaning Jobs

Many deck cleaning products also work well to clean other outside parts of your home.  Gutter cleaning products include a hooked brush that gets up into the gutter to clean the leaves out.  Also certain products like Shingle Shield Roof Cleaner work well on both wood decks and as roof cleaning products.

Also pressure washers are very helpful in cleaning decks, roofs, and gutters.  Often people are so quick to use chemical cleaners on their decks that they do not stop and think about the benefits of just giving it a very good spray-down with a pressure washer.

What would be the ratio using water, white vinegar and baking soda to clean a wooden deck?

Thank you.
