Best Eco Friendly Crayons: Beeswax and Soy Crayons Safer for Children

Eco Friendly Crayons

Eco friendly crayons may seem like a contradiction in terms.  After all, aren’t crayons supposed to be non-toxic?  Industry standards say that crayons are non-toxic, but most of them are made from petroleum byproducts, which you certainly would not want going into your child’s mouth any time soon.

Also some crayons tested positive for trace amounts of asbestos years ago, although most manufacturers have changed their recipes since then.  All in all, what you do not know about your children’s crayons could end up hurting them in the long run.

Types of Eco Friendly Crayons

The most basic element that makes environmentally friendly crayons truly earth-conscious is the fact that they are made from natural materials instead of petroleum byproducts.  Here are some wonderful natural alternatives to traditional crayons:

  • Soy crayons
  • Beeswax crayons
  • Natural mineral powders to add colors
  • Natural plant dyes

Most eco friendly crayons will be some combination of the above ingredients, with the main part of the crayon being either soybean crayons or beeswax crayons and the eco friendly colors coming from either natural mineral powder or natural plant dye.

The Best Brands of Eco Friendly Crayons

The main issue people have with eco friendly crayons is the fact that they are extremely hard to find.  Many brick and mortar retailers, even art supply stores, do not sell environmentally friendly crayons, so you may have to look online.

Prang soy crayons are probably the most well-known brand of green crayons.  Other popular brand names in eco friendly crayons include:

  • Clementine
  • Crazy Crayons
  • Crayon Rocks
  • Stockmar Beeswax Crayons

Some people prefer beeswax to soy crayons because coloring with them resembles the look of watercolors.  Any of these eco friendly crayons are of top quality, and often it is impossible to tell the difference between colors made by traditional crayons and those made by these natural crayon versions.  The only difference is that they are much safer for your children and for Mother Earth.

Eco Friendly Crayons and Other Eco Friendly Art Supplies

In addition to environmentally friendly crayons, there are also plenty of other eco friendly art supples.  Eco friendly pencils are made of recycled paper rather than wood, and they come with synthetic erasers rather than true rubber, which takes a long time to replace.

Eco friendly markers like those made by Auspen are non-toxic and recyclable.  Even Crayola is getting in on the eco friendly marker market with its Classic Washable Marker, which are non-toxic and odorless.  The manufacturer is currently in the process of revamping some of its other lines to make them earth-friendly as well.

Whenever you are searching for eco friendly art supplies of any kind, just read the labels to find out what they are made out of.  Remember that non-toxic does not necessarily mean it is completely safe for your children.  Only supplies that are made of natural ingredients are truly safe.

I have a question regarding the natural mineral powder or natural plant dye. My son has a red dye allergy which causing him contact dermatitis and eczema on his face. I do not have the red dye number that he is allergic to as of yet (waiting a patch test result). So my question is what is natural mineral powder or natural plant dye and do I have to worry of a red dye issues? He is only in the first grade so of course crayons, markers, colored pencils and paints are in his everyday routine. Right now I’m keeping him from all of the above to avoid his reaction. I really would love to find a crayon, marker, colored pencil and paint he can use. I really am hoping your products will work. Please respond at your earliest convenience. Thank you.
